In Microsoft Word I have created two projects that incorporate different features of it. They are:
1- Mail Merge:
Mail Merge is a tool found in MS Publisher and MS Word. However, my portfolio includes a mail merge carried out in Microsoft Word. Therefore, to carry out mail merge I created a data in Excel, and I inserted a certificate made in Corel Draw.
Mail merge is a useful feature in MS Word, since it allows everyone to easily produce multiple documents like letters, cards, envelopes and so on from a list stored in spreadsheet. This feature is used in almost all the working environments. Schools can use this function to send invitation cards, print certificates and so on. However, for example if certificates are already printed, print merge can be carried out in Corel Draw.
Since, it is difficult to say which program is best, I would say use of mail merge feature to produce multiple documents saves a lot of time and uniformity is seen than typing the details separately.

2- Insert Citation (Referencing)
MS Word offers a productive tool for citing sources. Citing or referencing is done in order to avoid plagiarism, give credit and acknowledge the contribution of other writers. In academic writings, referencing makes the writing more persuasive.
There are software like ZOTERO, much better than MS Word, where students can use when citing. Unlike in MS Word ZOTERO helps students to create libraries and save searches, store screen shots of the web page and share collections with others. In addition, it helps to view records in personal collection when offline even. So for me ZOTERO makes my academic writings more organized.
However, I noticed the tool used for reference in MS Word is also pretty easy to use for academic writings. Below is a sample referencing carried out in MS Word.
